Though well known for its population of gay men, "WeHo" also has a large population of Russian-Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, music clubs such as the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, Troubadour, The Roxy Theatre, opened, venues that eventually became renowned launch pads for many famous musical acts. More music clubs soon followed, establishing West Hollywood as a major location the live music industry.

The West Hollywood Halloween Carnival, held on October 31 each year along Santa Monica Boulevard, is the biggest Halloween street party in the U.S. It attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year and features a parade, food, live music, and of course a costume contest. (Given the proximity to Hollywood, you can expect many extremely elaborate costumes each year!) Besides the events along Santa Monica Blvd. (closed to vehicular traffic during the event), many neighborhood hotels, restaurants, and bars also offer their own events.

The area of Los Angeles immediately next to West Hollywood is known as the Fairfax District. It contains some places incorrectly thought to be in West Hollywood, including the The Original Farmers Market.

Things to do in West Hollywood:

Visit the popular Sunset Strip, the perfect place to walk, eat something delicious and tasty, dance and enjoy the nightlife, or just hang out with friends while you sip a couple of nice cocktails. Choices here seem to never end, and this is what makes this place so cool. You have probably heard about it, or seen it on TV or even in the movies. This is an iconic place that you need to visit.

You can also go to the Sunset Plaza for a little bit of a shopping spree. The shopping and the important sales are not the only good news about this place, there is another cool fact and it's the completely free parking! How is that for starting the day on the right foot? This is the place where you will find the hottest promotions in West Hollywood; you will enjoy a bit of art in the galleries and if you are very lucky, you can even enjoy a fashion show.

For additional shopping, the Beverly Center offers more than 100 of the world’s best designers and luxury brands. The iconic 8-story building has been a location in several movies (Scenes from a Mall, Volcano). The bad news- unlike at the Sunset Plaza, parking isn’t free.

Designers probably have heard of the Pacific Design Center, the West Coast’s primary resource for anything and everything related to interior design, architecture, and facility management. The 1,6000 million sq. foot campus is hard to miss with its 3 iconic buildings- the “Blue Whale,” Green Building, and Red Building with their distinctive and bright colors. The campus also houses a branch location of the Los Angeles Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the only one in the L.A. area that doesn’t charge admission.

You can't leave West Hollywood without going for a celebrity home tour once you are here; this is a must that should be highlighted on your list of activities. Several companies offer buses to take you around the area and show you where the rich and famous live.
