Local Business Reviews and Happenings
This city was founded on fishing, logging, and coal mining, with San Francisco being its best customer. Then Boeing was founded and the city started to grow. Over the last several years, the city has further developed thanks to Microsoft's money and other software and biotech proceeds.
Seattle is historically diverse and a place to embrace multiculturalism. Discrimination based on race is considered extremely offensive. Go, Seattle! Tons of people have heard about the "Seattle Freeze" a way to express that locals can be a bit cold. But in reality, this is due to a bit of shyness. If you want to meet people here, you are going to need to make the first move.
Seattle is divided into 11 districts:
- Downtown: this is the retail core of the city, home to the waterfront and the place where you'll find nice architecture.
- Pioneer Square-International District: an oldie in Seattle.
- Queen Anne-South Lake Union: this is the home of the world-famous Space Needle.
- Capitol Hill-Central District: the gay capital of Seattle.
- Ballar: a residential area, a place known among locals for its Scandinavian heritage.
- Fremont and Wallingford: the self-proclaimed center of the universe. A boho and artsy area.
- University District: the home of the University of Washington campus.
- North Seattle: a residential place.
- SoDo-Georgetown: an industrial district.
- Beacon Hill-South Seattle-Columbia City-Rainier Beach
- West Seattle: a scenic residential area with a nice view over the harbor.
Seattle's weather is known for being rainy and dark, but some people find the climate very attractive, especially during the summers.
You can get around by using the public transit. The Metro Transit actually works quite well. The web trip planner is accurate as long as your bus is on time. You can also help yourself with Google Maps. A fare is required on all buses and you should always pay while boarding the bus.
You can also know Seattle by car, don't let the rush hours intimidate you. Renting a car is not a crazy idea (unlike in some other American cities), the city streets and roadways are quite hospitable. If you like to ride your bike this will be a nice option too. You will find extensive bicycle trails and lanes and the temperature will help you.
