Back on June 19, 1910, a Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. This was the day when Father’s Day was established as a holiday.
Spokane is within the Northern/Canadian Rockies ecoregion. This means that you will find an incredible abundance of wildlife here. This area has a very dense vegetation: forest, hills, meadows, and tons of grass.
Spokane has been criticized for its lack of diversity and multicultural offerings, but this is changing because the city is becoming a little more diverse. The Asian and Russian communities are growing.
If you are into nature, this is definitely a place you will love. There are tons of open-air spaces and parks in which you will feel blessed.
Riverfront Park- Spokane Falls and the surrounding land has long been a gathering place for people. Native Americans gathered and fished at the falls. In the late 1800's, pioneers settled here and started the city of Spokane. The railroad industry fueled the city's growth and rail yards covered Havermale Island, the present site of Riverfront Park. This is the perfect place to spend some quality time with the family!
The Spokane area has numerous lakes, streams, and rivers where you can have the time of your life while canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. The nearby mountains are home to wonderful ski resorts that host downhill and cross-country skiing along with many snowshoe trails. The Spokane hiking, biking, and climbing areas are simply spectacular.
If you are into history and arts, you can visit the Fox Theater for a delighting show and a bit of a vintage touch. Built during the dark days of the Depression by Fox West Coast Theaters, this place was the largest theater in Spokane. With over 2000 seats, this place can really hold a crowd. Architect Robert Reamer designed the Theater in the exuberant and modernistic Art Deco style.
