Local Business Reviews and Happenings
Located in northern Arizona, it's named after a ponderosa pine flagpole made by a scouting party from Boston, as a way to celebrate the United States Centennial on the 4th of July in 1876. The early economy of Flagstaff was based on the lumber, railroad, and ranching industries. The story nowadays is pretty different, because Flagstaff became an important distribution hub for huge companies such as Nestlé.
With a rather dry semi-continental climate, people here can enjoy the five distinct seasons, cold winters, windy springs, hot summers, wet and humid monsoon seasons, and pleasant falls. The combination of high elevation and low humidity provide mild weather conditions throughout the year.
This city is very popular among the outdoor enthusiasts because of the high elevation, weather, and the varied terrain. Many campers, climbers, runners, and bikers come here to have a blast. The reason: there are 679.2 acres of city parks in Flagstaff. The largest ones are Thorpe Park, Buffalo Park, and Wheeler Park. The FLUTS or Flagstaff Urban Trails System has over 50 miles of paved and unpaved trails for all sorts of sports.
Flagstaff is very close to Grand Canyon National Park, which has made it a very popular tourist destination.
