South Lake Tahoe is the biggest city of the El Dorado County. Did you know that you can gamble here because there is an area that's technically on the Nevada side of the state border? That's why it was a huge deal when Harvey's Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall opened back in 1944.
When the 1960 Winter Olympics came to Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe was put firmly on the map as the skiing center of the western United States. Tons of tourists travel to this place every year to enjoy the snow and to practice some skiing.
Lake Tahoe has a snowy climate with chilly winters and very hot summers (at least during the day). So this place has the best of both worlds. This is why according to the season, you might enjoy a beach or an icy mountain.
Once you are here you need to check out the Lower Eagle Falls, the very blue and mountain-full Emerald Bay, and Pope Beach, which is a nice spot for kayakers.

For a colder adventure, you have tons of fun options. Visit the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena and skate the day away. This is the perfect and safe place to learn or practice some moves on the ice. This is an indoor facility that is opened year around. You can also go for a chilly ride inside a Gondola in Heavenly. It doesn't matter if you are not a pro on the skis or if you are too scared to even try it, you can take a ride and enjoy the whiteness of the hills from another point of view. Take the Gondola ride and make sure you take your camera because you will want to keep in your memories the views of the Sierra Nevada.
For a little bit of history, you can visit the Tallac Historic Site. A very massive place made up of three Estates (Baldwin Estate, Pope Estate, Valhalla) and built back in 1894. Each Estate has something fun and different to offer guests. Open during summer months, visitors can can also enjoy several interactive exhibits, as well as the 2-day Gatsby Festival during the second week of August.
