The greater Fairbank areas are true to their roots, so you are in a good place to find Alaskan originals (don't let the Walmart fool you).

The easiest way to get around is by driving a car, but be very careful if the conditions are snowy. Major car rental companies are located at the airport and downtown. There are also multiple taxi companies that will take you around the city. 

Things to do in Fairbanks:

For a little bit of "cold art," you can visit the Aurora Ice Museum. It's only logical that people here make art out of ice and you will be truly impressed by the results. This place was created by using tons of ice and snow. Even the facade is made out of ice, and you will be extremely cold once you are inside. Even if you visit them during the summertime, the temperatures will be very low- they need to avoid a meltdown. But don't worry, the best part is that they thought about pretty much everything and they will rent you some parkas at the entrance. 

For some culture and local history, you can go to the Chena Indian Village. This is a place to get closer to the Athabasca culture and to get a glimpse of the way people lived. Some of the guides here are students at Alaska University, and this is considered a way of serving and reviving their culture. 

If you like snow, you can visit Ski Land. Take a ride on the fastest chairlift in the country and rent the proper equipment to enjoy some snowboarding or skiing. If snow makes you a little hungry, you can stop at the cafe and enjoy some delightful pastries and a warm cup of coffee.
 
Other things you can check out:

- Creamer's Field: this is a wildlife refuge or a migratory stopover for the Canada geese, ducks and bird species.

- Pioneer Air Museum: Located in Pioneer Park, the Air Museum contains dozens of aircraft and equipment related to Alaska’s unique aviation history.

- Ice Alaska: this is the place where the best ice sculptors from all around the world come to test their skills on the World Ice Art Championship. 

- seeing an Aurora (winter): Fairbank is located under the "Aurora Oval", so this is a great place to enjoy the aurora borealis, a true spectacle of nature.
