Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is the only California Mission built with Moorish architecture. Designed by Father Antonio Cruzado with a strong Moorish architectural influence, it has capped buttresses and tall and narrow windows that are unique to this mission. Also, unlike the other Missions, it has no bell tower- the bells are in a separate wall.
The chapel survives as California's oldest building south of Monterey. The original pulpit remains, and the alter was brought from Mexico in the 1790’s. The altar's highlight is the painting of “Our Lady of Sorrows.”
