The goal of the California Missions was to become self-sufficient in a relatively short period of time, focusing on agriculture. The priests established what they considered a manual training school for teaching the local natives the Spanish style of agriculture, mechanical arts, and the care and raising of livestock. Mission San Gabriel Arcángel became one of the largest, wealthiest, and most productive of California's missions.
The Mission offers a lot to see from walking around the garden- various statues, outdoor kitchens, a winery, water cisterns, soap and candle vats, tanning vats for preparing cattle hides, and a cemetery.
There is another cemetery outside the Mission, next to the church.
