Back when I lived in Korea, the American Forces Network (military TV/radio stations providing U.S. programming for the troops stationed abroad) was always repeating short infomercials about peculiar places/people in the U.S. One of them was about “Hi Jolly” (see video- the Hi Jolly part starts at 29 seconds into it). I only happened to remember it because of the quirkiness of the U.S. Army trying to develop a Camel Corps for desert operations, but didn’t remember most of the other details (like the location).

A few years ago, my wife and I were driving from California to Sedona (Arizona) and stopped in the small town of Quartsite for gas and lunch. Afterwards, my wife wanted to check out the local rock/gem market, so I decided to wander around the tiny town. I walked down a side street and came across the Hi Jolly monument completely by accident, and suddenly remembered the old infomercials!

It’s one of those moments that you probably had to be there to appreciate it. But I’m sure all my expat friends in Korea who have seen the infomercial will get a kick out of it.smiley
