Do you get lonely when you travel? Not in this hotel!
Well, let me clear something first for those who think of a certain type of drama scene at the hotel bar- it’s not that kind! Although it is animal attraction. Literally! ;)

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland was the first hotel where I stayed that not only welcomes pets, but they will even provide one (or 2) pets for you if you feel lonely and ask for it!

Actually, Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland is not the first Kimpton Hotel where I’ve stayed. Last year I stayed at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Denver. So I had a chance to compare the two. Which do I like more? Definitely the one in Portland! Here is what I liked, and I also include what disappointed me.

First, the Portland one got my interest from the reservation with a choice of not-lonely room with a pet…in our case it was tiny goldfish. It was not much compared to what I anticipated, but still the idea and fun thought counts.

Other than the pet part, the rooms in Portland and Denver were pretty similar. I can certainly feel the magic of a designer touch in the stylish rooms and bathrooms with lots of patterns and images and contrasting colors that work beautifully for both properties. Although both hotel rooms were certainly fun rooms to stay, I liked the one in Portland a little more because I got to look down the street- the room in Denver just overlooked the parking lot.

In the closet, there was an umbrella for the guests. It was thoughtful considering how much it rains in Portland.  Of course, Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s signature animal pattern robes were in the closet in both hotel rooms. I had enjoyment laughing at my husband wearing it this year again in Portland! ;)

Also, I liked the large bottles of bathroom amenities rather than disposables. I also liked the magnifying mirror/light, which worked very well at night as a night light- the entire room is really dark, so it can be dangerous when you have to find the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Another part of Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland that I liked was their gorgeous lobby lounge area. The lounge area was mainly decorated in my favorite color (red), with a variety of patterns and colors. I just thought it was a really inviting place and I want to decorate my living room like that.  I already posted pictures of the lounge area so you can check them out here:

The hotel holds many events here in its beautiful lounge for the guests such as free nightly wine tasting and free Voodoo Doughnut days. Unfortunately, I do not drink very often and I was not able to stay until the free doughnut day, so I did not get to enjoy it at all.

One thing that I was really disappointed at the hotel was that I was told that we get a $5 credit to use at the hotel per day if we opt for no-housekeeping service to conserve and preserve the environment. So it seemed to be a great policy for me since I did not want to create unnecessary work for the staff members, and I was hoping to dine at the hotel restaurant on the day when we checked out with a discounted price using the accumulated credit.

We asked the hotel at checkout what we need to do to use that credit. Then we found out that the credit has to be used before checkout. What a bummer! Why did the hotel staff fail to mention that when they told the policy? The hotel could’ve made more money if we had dined there…oh, well…we got disappointed by that, so we decided to eat elsewhere for our last meal in downtown Portland.

Regardless of that disappointment, I think the location of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland was excellent and very convenient downtown within walking distance of the river, and the hotel atmosphere was great. Above all, I loved the décor! It was definitely one of the most memorable hotel that I stayed for me.
