It all started when someone realized that the sand here was so thick that they could practice with their motorbikes on it. As soon as the first man explored the terrain, Daytona became the host for more than 50 years of the Daytona Beach Road Course. These races were very disorganized, so NASCAR entered the picture to help them a little with the formalities. Nowadays there is a NASCAR headquarters here in Daytona Beach.
The Museum of Arts and Sciences is the primary culture center of the city (there are other fun museums, but this is the core of culture in Daytona). This place collects other museums and galleries, it's a big museum that holds many little ones. They are known for having the largest permanent exhibition of Cuban art outside of Cuba, the second largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia in the world (on the Roots Family Museum), and the skeleton of a giant sloth- the biggest one in North America.
Things to explore in Daytona Beach:
Plan a super fun visit to the Daytona International Speedway. You have two options here. You can buy some tickets for the Daytona 500 (the world's first motorsports stadium) or for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Either way, you will enjoy the speed and the adrenaline of these adventures on wheels.
The beach at Daytona Beach is huge- they have about 23 miles of sand for you. This beach is open to pedestrians 24 hours a day and 7 days at a week and access is completely free. Is not just about the beach, you will find here several beachfront parks that will guarantee family fun. The most popular ones are Lighthouse Point Park and Smyrna Dunes Park.
You can't leave without visiting a pier. Here in Daytona, you will find the Sunglow Pier where you can fish and enjoy a nice meal. Don't worry if you forgot your bait, they will sell it to you on the pier.
If you are looking for a little bit of a shopping spree you will be glad to know that you can do that while you enjoy the fresh sea breeze. The other great thing is that if you get hungry or want to stop for a cup of coffee there are tons of options. For a shopping adventure, you can stroll along the Sweetheart Trail.
Visit the Riverfronts Farmer's Market for a little bit of fresh local flavor. This is the perfect spot to find anything organic, fresh seafood, local food and baked goodies! A very relaxed gastronomic adventure that will truly make you taste the flavors of Daytona.
