The word Chattahoochee comes from a Muskogee word meaning "rocks-marked." And this is true- you will find tons of colorful granite rocks along the river.

Columbus has tons of museums and tourist sites, so if you are going to plan a visit you can be sure that there will be a lot to do here.

If you have heard about Columbus, then you probably heard about its university. Once the city started to expand, the leaders who were in favor of the expansion founded Columbus College, an institution that later (1996) became Columbus State University. It offers programs in more than ninety academic disciplines and is one of the best places for higher learning in the U.S.

Things to do in Columbus:

As we said, the Chattahoochee River is a very important part of Columbus, this is why you have to visit the RiverWalk. This is an outdoor linear park that goes along for 15 miles (25 km.) and is just beside the river. This is a great way to spend the day, relax with the watery sound of the dams, enjoy a stroll, and take some pictures of the sculptures you will find on the way.

Go to the Columbus Museum for a very interesting experience and for a little bit of extra knowledge. The museum focuses on bringing American art to life. Nowadays they offer an interactive children's gallery, a large auditorium, and permanent and temporary exhibitions. All visitors who come here can also enjoy and relax at the Bradley Olmsted Garden

You can finish your trip at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. This place is definitely one of the nation’s leading military history destinations. They have everything from interactive exhibitions to media galleries, and immersive attractions.

The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus focuses on the naval aspects of the Civil War. Exhibits include 2 military vessels (CSS Jackson, CSS Chattahoochee), weapons, uniforms, and equipment used during the time. It also includes the largest collection of Civil War era navy-related flags in the country.
