In order to see Alaska’s grand ocean glaciers on the Kenai Peninsula in the Gulf of Alaska, you have to visit Prince William Sound. Prince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska is a popular area among tourists with its beautiful scenery.

The largest port in the area is Valdez, at the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Other nearby settlements in the numerous small islands include Cordova and Whittier, plus the Alaska native villages of Chenega and Tatitlek.
This time I took a glacier cruise from Whittier.

There are numerous ocean glaciers in Prince William Sound. Among those, Blackstone Bay, Surprise, Barry Glacier, and Harriman Fjord are the best.

When I started, the clouds covered all the area and made me worried. Fortunately, I was able to see glaciers and clouds together.

In 1778, James Cook entered Prince William Sound and named it Sandwich Sound  (after his patron, the Earl of Sandwich). The Sound was re-named by British captain George Vancouver to honor George III's third son, Prince William Henry (who was then 13 and serving in the Royal Navy as a midshipman).

There were people spending their vacations by camping on uninhabited islands like this. When you camp here, you have to make sure that you completely remove all the waste that you create.

One sea bird startled by the sound of the boat engine flew over.

Then a sea otter showed up as well.

Then there was a group of sea otters.
It is absolutely cute and fun to see sea otters eating. They put their food, such as shellfish or clams, on their belly while floating upside down and break them with a stone.

The scenery of a frozen glacier always amazes me.

Much of the land around Prince William Sound belongs to the Chugach National Forest (the 2nd largest National Forest in America), and Chugach Mountains for part of a ring around Prince William Sound. The elaborate coastline contains many islands and fjords, several of which contain tidewater glaciers. Montague Island, Hinchinbrook Island, and Hawkins Island make up the main barrier islands forming Prince William Sound.

A salmon fishing boat was busy heading somewhere.

This cloud formation looks as if someone cut off the bottom.
I found Alaska’s clouds provide a uniqueness with its scenery.

Seagulls made their homes here.
I felt Prince William Sound is their own heaven.

The ice that drifted from a glacier highlighted even more the emerald color.

The glacier looked as if it was being absorbed by the ocean.

I believe the worst enemy of nature is humans.

Do you remember that the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in 1989 after leaving Valdez, causing a large oil spill? The spill caused massive damage to the environment, including killing of around 250,000 seabirds, nearly 3,000 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles, and 22 killer whales.

With this horrible oil spill accident, this area was called a dead ocean.

It is devastating news that these grand glaciers are melting even faster then ever.

This has melted even more.

To be honest, the glacier cruises like I was on are helping these precious glacier to melt away with the heat from cruise boats.

This whole mountain area was covered with a glacier, but now it feels like an almost empty bowl.
