100Stone Project and Sunset (Anchorage, AK)
Primary tabs
I went to Point Woronzof near Anchorage Airport where the 100Stone project is being installed. The scene was amazingly beautiful with sunset in Anchorage and the sculptures installed in the beach.
100Stone
The 100Stone project is a creative social art and civic engagement project that captured the personal wellness management stories of hundreds of Alaskans in sculptural form. Before its completion, the project will have installed 100 human figures on the tidal beach at Point Woronzof Overlook Park, walking into the icy waters.
Each figure is sculpted from, and by, people directly affected by persistent emotional pressures. The works are in burlap, plaster, cement, and straw. The statues are the physical representations of hundreds of unique experiences of vulnerability arising from different circumstances, like trauma, grief, chronic and mental illness, substance abuse, and other difficult life circumstance. They also represent powerful stories of resilience in the face of long-term self-care and management.
