You might not know it, but Albany is the capital city of the state of New York. This confusion might come from the popularity of Manhattan. Not only that, Albany also constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State.

Albany was the very first European settlement in the state of New York. The first ones to arrive were Dutch colonists who were nice enough to maintain good relationships with the natives that occupied the area. Then the English came and colonized; they were not as nice as the first ones to arrive. This was back in 1664. The city name was changed to Albany to honor the Duke of Albany.

It became the capital of New York State in 1797, following the United States gaining independence in the American Revolutionary War. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original thirteen British colonies.

The neighborhoods of Albany are varied because of their location, their history, their architecture, and the people who live in them. The architecture here has a strong Dutch and English influence, because of the colonies that settled here. You can also enjoy a lot of modern American architecture because of Governor's Rockefeller demands.

This is a city of immigrants, as in many other places in New York. The population here has been mixed ever since forever. There are tons of Irish, Italians, Poles, African-Americans, Dutch, German, and English descendants.

Albany is known currently for its festivals. The Tulip Festival, that is one of the largest celebrated here, is set in Washington Park and celebrates the city's Dutch heritage. The event also celebrates the arrival of spring with the blooming of tons of tulips. Obviously, this festival takes place in early May. The other very popular festival is the Gay Pride Parade that is held during June.

Once you are here, you can visit the New York State Museum. This is a place that treasures art, and several artifacts that talk about New York’s development in numerous fields. You can also visit the Museum Ship for a historical revival. This ship docked in the Hudson River at Quay Street and has been preserved as a very interesting war museum.

The Egg, that has this name because of its particular shape, is a performing arts center, and one of the top Albany attractions. The place was built between 1966 and 1978, and it looks like a sculpture more than a building. If it's fun on the outside you can imagine how fun it will be on the inside.

End your tour with a visit to the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza , which is a government building, located on the Madison Avenue (this is the place where The Egg is). The plaza also features shade trees, water fountains, memorials, and a skating rink. There are many special events that are held at the plaza, including craft fairs, farmers’ markets, school performances, and summer festivals.
